I hate this!
Nah, I don’t.
But I didn’t like the first trade. I just finished the second trade, and a lot of the things I didn’t like are changing. Introducing Marrisville made a big difference for me. Also, Brett is right and Dr. Mann is great.
I love the concept. And I love the mythology. And I understand that in any post-apocalyptic scenario one of the first things you’re gonna explore is how hard it is to rebuild a functional society again. And you’re definitely going to explore all the different crazies that rise up in the wake of that. But by virtue of the entire comic’s concept, I felt like I was reading for way too long about how “All them men went away and all them women just can’t pull it together. Women would be lost if they lost all them men.”
Also, Victoria - who had some legit points about women’s role in the old world - was only allowed to be a crazy, hypocritical bitch thereby nullifying any argument in the comic about how, like, shit wasn’t awesome before.
Like I said, Marrisville made a big difference and I think cool things are to come. So this post is done.
It is dedicated to
1. my crippling inability to just enjoy something without processing it through a feminist lens
2. people who are sick of that
3. JD Amato because he knows why and
4. The freedom to have and articulate opinions about things you might not like because I think if you really ask yourself why you don’t like something, it can be interesting and fun and it makes you better understand why you love what you do love.
I say stick with it! I think the first trade deals with the shock of the disaster and then they can get to exploring the all female world later. I never felt that the view was “the women can’t pull it together” but rather “the inequality that existed before the disaster is really making it difficult to rebuild society.” But that’s just my own view of it, I’m not a woman, and I’m interested to hear what you think!
